Widespread internet problems in South Africa are suspected to be related to issues at Microsoft’s Azure data centres.
Widespread problems were affecting the internet in South Africa on Thursday, and are likely linked to problems at Microsoft’s local Azure cloud data centres.

A notice on Microsoft’s Azure service page indicated that issues involving “network latencies” were impacting services across the country on Thursday afternoon.

Microsoft’s website was inaccessible as of 1.45pm SAST, as were Microsoft services such as the Bing search engine and its Teams collaboration software.

However, a screenshot shared with TechCentral from Microsoft’s Azure status page stated: “We are currently investigating a networking event impacting Azure Services in South Africa North and South Africa West.”

South African North and West refer to Microsoft’s two data centre regions in South Africa, one located in Gauteng, and the other in the Western Cape.

“We will provide further updates as information becomes available,” the notice stated.

A spokeswoman for Microsoft South Africa could not immediately be reached by phone for comment. – © 2024 NewsCentral Media
